HAIR DRYERS ARE HOT AND WHEN MISUSED MAY CAUSE FIRES, PROPERTY DAMAGE, SKIN BURNS, INJURY, OR DEATH. CONSULT YOUR HAIR DRYER USER MANUAL AND DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS ABOUT HOW TO USE A HAIR DRYER SAFELY. BY PROCEEDING, YOU ASSUME ANY AND ALL RISKS.
⚠️ CAUTION: DO NOT USE A HEAT GUN TOOL. Those tools are designed for extremely high industrial heat and may cause harm to the instrument or yourself.
If you are not comfortable proceeding, take your saxophone to a professional repair shop for removal of the bow patch.
-
Using the hair dryer set to medium heat, aim the air column so half goes down through the the Low C tone hole and the other half goes across the sax bow. This helps warm the sax metal and RULON Bow Patch, softening the adhesive.
-
Insert the pencil eraser into the low Eb tone hole and gently press the eraser against the edge of the RULON Bow Patch.
⚠️ CAUTION: BE GENTLE. PUSHING ANY OBJECT WITH GREAT FORCE INTO SAXOPHONE METAL MAY DENT YOUR INSTRUMENT.
⚠️ CAUTION: DO NOT PRY THE PENCIL AGAINST THE TONE HOLE. NOTICE THAT THE PENCIL IN THE IMAGE BELOW IS BRACED AGAINST THE KEY GUARD AND NOT TOUCHING THE TONE HOLE EDGE.
- The heat will soften the adhesive and rubber patch so they release under gentle steady pressure from the pencil eraser.
- If the patch does not loosen and remove with medium heat, try increasing the heating time. If that does not work, gradually increase heat temperature.
- Once the patch has released, tip your sax so the patch falls out of the bell.
- Place the tip of your finger into the Low C tone hole and rub away any adhesive or debris left inside the sax bow.
- Use a paper towel to clean the bow and clean the Low C and Low Eb tone hole edges while you’re at it. This helps extend pad life!
- Reattach the Low Eb and C keys.
- Reattach the needle springs to provide key spring so the low C is held open and the low Eb and is held closed.
