Matthew Lombard is a South African concert saxophonist who recently completed his doctorate at the University of California in Los Angeles under Douglas Masek. Matthew has gained international exposure as a performer and teacher and maintains an active presence as one of South Africa’s leading concert saxophonists through his influence as founding director of the South African Saxophone Society.
He has performed as chamber musician and soloist in South Africa, North America, China, England, Scotland, Croatia, and Germany. Matthew actively commissions new music form South African composers thought the South African Music Rights Organization, and has premiered many of these internationally for conferences and concert series’. In the US, where Matthew has most recently been based, he has performed in New Mexico, Cincinnati, and Los Angeles. Matthew has also been invited to present masterclasses around the Los Angeles area. Matthew is proud to be an ambassador of the Henri Selmer Paris company.
Matthew, his wife (Nicole), and three children (Hannah, Jemima, and Ethan) currently reside in Pretoria, South Africa, where Matthew is full time saxophone teacher at Pretoria Boys’ High School, and part-time lecturer at the University of South Africa, while maintaining a freelance performing career and overseeing the South African Saxophone Society.
